This is a Window Cleaning Network resource for the glass, construction and window cleaning industries, and owners of new homes and buildings. This website focuses on one issue - excessive abrasive fabricating debris defects on some uncoated tempered glass surfaces. The mission here is to provide credible information, and to increase demand for quality tempered glass surfaces.

Builders and homeowners have taken the hit for millions of dollars worth of damage to tempered glass. They may have blamed window cleaning practices for this damage, often without realizing that fabricating debris may have been the root cause, or without understanding how an uncoated tempered glass surface might have so much fabricating debris that it will scratch so easily.

This update contains several clarifications, including the statement that "The incidence of fabricating debris is greatly minimized when temperers adhere to all recommended maintenance procedures for washers, rollers and other tempering equipment." Print copies and show it to builders. Help them realize why they should insist on quality tempered glass - that can be scraped - and why they need to sign your waiver.
Some tempered glass surfaces have what are known as fabricating debris defects on the surface, including microscopic glass particles, which become fused to glass as it rolls through some tempering ovens. When there is too much fabricating debris, your tempered glass will be harder to clean and maintain - so it will be more susceptible to damage.
In house monitoring has been part of my dialog with fabricators dating back at least to 2005. The scraper test and inspection with a microscope is a way to get factory workers involved in quality control. It could be a management tool or the topic of a QA meeting. The key is to get them talking, and keep reminding fabricators that quality makes sense for them, too. Part of my mission is to show that we understand - defects on the roller side are causing a tempered glass scratch crisis, not scrapers.
